Had a delicious lobster roll here. So
much lobster in it, I could not believe it. I wanted to try the chowder, but it had bacon in it, so I opted out. The restaurant itself is pretty casual and works very well on the harbor. If you sit outside, you can see the boats and really get the experience. That made the atmosphere for me. Really enjoyed the food here, but it was a little more touristy than I expected.

small, but good.
since the chowder house is right on the portland harbor, it allows the fish, chowda, and clams to be wicked fresh. it is a small chowder house. all of the food is great. you really have to try it to beleive me.

Best Chowder In Portland.
Gilbert's chowder is chock full of clams, potatoes and just the right amount of celery and bacon. The broth is the perfect consistency, neither too soupy or too goopy. You can get your seafood either fried or broiled. Haddock, shrimp, scallops and whole bellied clams are ultra fresh and made fresh to order. Check the fresh board for daily specials. The double lobster dinner is a common sellout.
Gilbert's is a Portland institution.
