In Short
Beerhounds come from far and wide to sample exceptionally fresh English-style brews like Original Pub Style, McDuff's Best Bitter and Black Fly Stout. Indecisive drinkers can opt for a circular sampler of short glasses. Communal, beer hall tables yield a social vibe, and large TVs show all the big games.

I had one bad expierence here, and it's skewed my opinion on Gritty's permanently. A few years back, when I was 18, I went to Gritty's to eat lunch with a friend (it was about 11:30 AM). My friend and I ordered our NOT alcoholic drinks, which apparently sent up red flags to our waitress. "Wait, no beers?" she asked. Not a beat later she says, "How old are you guys?" We tell her we're 18, and she then kicks us out, telling us that we're not allowed to eat there because we're underage and without a gaurdian. Oddest part of all, I had eaten there, with the same friend, only a couple weeks before, without any problems. This was a BIG disappointment, and I can honestly say I have not been back to Gritty's in a very long time.
Pros: good food, good beer
Cons: terrible waitstaff, inconsistent, a tad pricey

Right smack in the middle of the Old Port in Portland, Gritty's is a great place to meet friends for a happy hour pint, to get a mellow lunch, or to party like a rock star. Their beer is tasty and there's a wide selection to please any palette. (I'd recommend the stout if it's in season.) Their burgers are tasy, too. Gritty's underwent renovations in early 2002 to make the main room roomier. (On most weekend nights without fail, the bar would be so packed that you could barely walk through!) But despite the occasional crowd, the beer is good, the atmosphere relaxed and casual, and the food what you'd expect from a good pub. Try it for yourself!
Pros: Good beer, Convenient location, Casual
Cons: Sometimes crowded, Pricy, Poor service
