Affordable Doggie Daycare for dogs whose owners work at home or away.

by black2bear at Citysearch

Great Island Kennel started to offer week day Doggy Day Care this fall. I am a writer/editor whose biggest challenge is finding productive "quiet time". It is sometimes hard to get that, especially in the winter when weather may make leisurely long dog walks a challenge. When my dog is bored, he stations himself next to my desk and repeatedly uses his nose to pry my hand off the computer keyboard. Cute the first time; now, not so much. On day care days, I drop him off at 9 am. and pick him up between 6 and 7 p.m.; he comes home really tired. Sometimes after day care he goes to bed very early, so tired that he is practically comatose. I like it that I get to choose which days he goes to day care; it is very flexible. I also like it that dogs that get along well are chosen to play together. . There is good supervision; so I have not worried about safety. At $20 per day, it is an affordable option for people who work at home or away. Or for people who really enjoy having a happy, well-balanced relationship with their dog. And a happier dog.

  • Pros: Affordable, safe, good management; private road well maintained and cleared.
  • Cons: None that I can think of

A very good dog boarding experience..

by bisbeetq at Citysearch

Great Island Kennel is an entirely satisfactory place to temporarily board a dog. When I picked up my two year

old, 65# male herding breed dog after a 4 day stay, it was obvious that he had enjoyed his stay. Evidence of ample exercise included his calm demeanor when he greeted me at the end of his stay and his relaxed attitude when he arrived at home. There was none of the release of bottled up energy and frustration that comes from being too closely confined. While he entered the kennel with very limited experience with "dog parties" he willingly joined in the fun. It was reassuring to me that his individual indoor run opened to an individual outdoor run which, in turn, connected with the group play area. That meant that B could decide to participate in group interaction or retire to his own space when he was tired of group play. He smelled fresh, clean and sweet when I picked him up. No sour smell; no scent of artificial deodorants. While he was happy to see me, I think that he will dream doggy dreams of Great Island Kennel's ocean views and sea breezes for some time to come.

  • Pros: Good all around experience
  • Cons: No major drawbacks. A bit more expensive than some other kennels in the area, but good quality of care.

Here, the dogs are on vacation too

The dogs love it. I've never used a kennel where my dogs run in and don't look back. Sometimes I think my dogs like it there better than home.
