Great Local Hangout – Having lived in Portland for years, this past summer I finally went to the Portland Lobster Company. Like many locals, I finally discovered this gem on the water in the Old Port. It has fresh seafood from lobster rolls to fried clams and great music on their outdoor deck to go along with several local beers. Having been to about everywhere in the Old Port now, I would put this place at the top of my list. Can't believe I never found this place before!
My friends and I were so excited about this place since Rachel Ray recommended it in one of her shows. The food taste fresh, however it was over price and by the time we got our order, the food was cold. And for our surprise we found a hair stuck between two fried shrimp. Totally disappointed.
avoid in general – I agree with the previous review. We thought the Portland Lobster Co would be a great place to get a quick meal and enjoy the beautiful weather. Since most of their food is fried, we figured it wouldn't take too long. We waited 40min for our food, finally went up to the counter to inquire about it, and found our order sitting on the counter. They had forgotten to page us. The food was cold so they "reheated it", but it came back about the same temperature--just covered in more grease. It could be a great spot, but they've got to get the kitchen staff up to speed. I'd also avoid the lobster bisque--it didn't have one piece of lobster in it. We weren't the only ones with who waited a long time and were disappointed with the results. I would recommend avoiding this place.
Avoid in the summer – The Portland Lobster Co. on the water front is a definite miss. They're very efficent at taking your order and your money at the counter, but when a 20-minute wait at the "pick up" window becomes 30 becomes 45 becomes 1hr, it seems their service ends at payment. Inquiries into when our orders may be ready were waved off, as were the 6-8 other customers also waiting at the window. From the street it seems like a fun waterfront restaurant, but their underskilled and defensive kitchen staff can't keep up with their order volume. Recipe for disappointment.
