I scheduled an appointment with Dathan.
UPDATED**
A few days ago Dathan Hunter called me and told me that he read the review and hoped that he could fix my hair if I'd update the review and I gladly took his offer. The color didn't really bother me too much anymore but I thought I'd just go get a little touch up. Dathan was super nice on the phone and when I met him again in person. I'm so happy that he wasn't mad at me for putting up this review! I honestly felt bad.... But he put on some toner and fixed it without charging me so it's all good now! Thanks Dathan!

I scheduled an appointment with Dathan Hunter to do a caramel/blonde ombre. I'm Asian with really dark brown/black hair. I've previously done ombre on it myself but my hair felt really damaged so I ended up cutting most of it off, also I didn't think it was light enough! I wanted to get my hair done before my birthday and was so excited to find out that Dathan was available just before and could take me in. By the reviews given by other customers, I knew I could trust him! When I got there, I was greeted by Dathan (I did not know he was Dathan!) and was then asked to have a seat because he was running behind. When I realized he was my stylist, I was really excited because he is so nice and funny! I'm sure he felt that I was nervous and joked around with me a few times. When the highlighting process was over, I was seated and was asked if I'd like coffee or tea. After washing my hair off, Dathan commented that he loved the way it turned out which made me feel obligated to agree while looking in the mirror. Then, he blow dried my hair. I thought it turned out pretty well... until I got home and looked in the mirror and saw that chunks on the side of my head did not blend in nicely. It basically went from dark brown to a blonde color without much of a transition. I was pretty upset knowing it cost me $115! Also the color, from the back, formed like a U shape where the back of my head is mostly dark and the blonde doesn't start until the tips. If I put my hair to the front, it isn't noticeable so I kind of wondered if I was being cheated....? I don't think so though, because it is such a high end salon. By the amount of foils he had put in, I thought the color would start higher. He even told me that he had started higher so I'd get my money's worth but I don't think I really did.... The chunks on the side really bugged me for a while. I thought I'd just use thinning shears or a razor to thin that part out so the blonde is less noticeable but I thought it would be a waste considering that was expensive. I contemplated about whether or not I should get it fixed but I didn't want to sound picky... -sigh- I'm just going to stick with it. If I were to get it fixed, I'd want the chunks to have better transitions and the ombre to start higher in the back because, to me, it looked pretty similar to how my hair was before, just lighter.
Cut and Color with understated panache. I moved back to Maine nine years ago and began researching a salon that was cutting edge and offered a sophisticated environment, not the noisy do-it-all salon that seems to have taken over the industry. Dathan Hunter was highly recommended. Dathan, the owner, was also the stylist to see. It's been several years now and not once have I been disappointed. I have difficult baby fine hair to cut and color. Dathan always manages to make me look and feel beautiful! He is a gifted person in many ways and will always be my stylist .
Amazing Color and Cut!!. I was hesitant to make an appointment at first, having been disappointed by surrounding salons in the area. My thin, blonde hair had been dried out and damaged by highlights in the past. Dathan knew exactly the kind of treatment my hair needed. I fell in love with the cut too!! By far the most professional and experienced salon I have been to. The staff genuinely wants you to love your hair!
Dathan Hunter Salon was a Dream Come True. Moving to Portland recently from a small town, I had always dreamed of finding a "big city salon". Dathan Hunter Salon fulfilled my hopes and then some. Coming to the salon with extremely color damaged hair, Marie went through and expertly corrected, what I'm sure would have been a color nightmere for most stylists. What most stylists would see as a daunting task to stay far away from, she saw as a challenge to be embraced. My color was outstanding, multi-dimensional, bright, exactly the shade that I asked for without wrecking my hair. Kristina took my split and frayed ends from a horror story of a cut to something sleek, stylish, and best of all, shiny. My hair felt healthy for the first time in years. And let's not forgot Laura, who's upbeat personality was almost fun as the beautiful extentions she added in to my hair. The whole team has worked on my hair at one point or another, and I can sing nothing but praises for them. An absolute dream salon, Dathan Hunter is like comfort food for my hair.
Great Salon In Every Way. I moved to Portland in June and have never really liked my hair. It is very curly and I am middle-aged and beginning to show some gray. I actually love silver hair and wanted to find a way to "go gray gracefully". Not only does Laura cut and style my hair with extreme precision but the highlights she has put in my hair to help my natural gray come in naturally look so good that I don't even see any gray at all. Every week I receive more and more compliments about my hair. I love my hair for the first time in my life. Laura is amazing!! The salon is great. The atmosphere is magnificent. I give Dathan Hunter Salon an A++.
Great Colorist. I spend a portion of the year in Maine, and was nervous about having my color done here, I've been seing the same colorist in California for years. I had my had my highlights and a glaze done by Dathan, I feel guilty for saying it but its the best color I've had in years. I try to have my color done and ends trimmed when ever I am in Maine.
Client for life.
Have been a client for 8 years . The Dathan Hunter salon has served me well even in a pinch. In some cases my schedule has been limited and I have had to get in with other stylists in the salon and have never been let down. The whole staff is talented.
Couldn't be happier.
The worst front desk people!.
I went to this salon and liked what Dathan did with color. Very professional.
The next month I had to cancel due to snow, and when i canceled I was told that the next appointment was in three weeks. For anyone with color for grey knows...4-5 weeks is the max, so to wait an additional three weeks ..it was a disaster. I however kept the later appointment,( it was winter and i had no place to go in Maine!) and was told this would not happen again!
Four weeks later, on an appointment that I thought was for a Friday, I was told that the date was a Thursday. Again, I could not make it...and again was told it would be a few weeks before I could come in!!
Now, I know they must be busy in Portland...but I was a customer in one of the top salons in NY and never experienced such inflexibility....and I never experienced a front desk manager who did not try everything to accmoodate the customer! NOT here...as she said "OK" to everyiting..including my not coming back....I felt bad for Dathan and his business!
I am off to another salon and will keep you all posted. But this salon had good work...but not great enough to suffer the hassle and the disinterest!!!!
The Best Salon. I've been going to Dathan for over 10 years and have always had the best service and attention. I get a cut and color, and have become addicted to "being" a blonde. Dathan knows if I'm asking for something that I won't maintain given my busy schedule, and customizes his approach based on the person and how they will maintain (or not) the style. I have sent all my friends and family there over the years and he has 100% satisfaction from all of them. I've even moved to New York, but still fly back every 4-6 weeks to get my hair done! It's always fun at the salon, and you always leave looking great.
Kristina - Skilled and Accommodating. I came to Dathan Hunter's thinking I knew exactly what I wanted and left with what I didn't know I wanted but totally did. Kristina was accommodating of my ideas while explaining for me what I would never think to consider and gave me a hair cut that was so much better than what I had been used to. I left looking forward to the breeze running through my hair even though it was well below freezing outside.
